02 / Automotive locksmithA car key has a few different jobs.
Automotive locksmithOakland, California.
It may open a door, start the engine and work the remote buttons. One of those can stop working while the others are fine. When you need a car locksmith in Oakland, start with what the key still does.
Choose the job that matches the car.
If the keys are on the seat, you may need an opening. If there's no key anywhere, you need to discuss replacement. If the car starts normally and you want another key for someone at home, that's a spare-key request. They don't all need the same parts or preparation.
The year, make and model help establish support. So does the type of key: a separate metal key, a remote-head key or a push-button-start fob. A photo of the current key or its packaging can help identify a part, but its appearance alone doesn't prove compatibility.
For all-keys-lost work, make clear that there isn't a working spare. The steps, available parts and cost can differ from copying a key you already have.
Cutting and programming are separate.
A metal blade may turn a lock while its chip is still unrecognized by the car. Remote buttons can also have their own setup requirements. Ask which functions are included rather than relying on the word key.
Bought a blank or fob online? Keep the listing, part number and packaging. Some parts cannot be used, and acceptance should be checked before arranging work. Our guide to customer-supplied blanks explains the questions to ask without assuming that every item can be cut or programmed.
The place the car is parked matters.
The car might be near Fruitvale BART, at home in the hills or in a controlled garage downtown. Give the vehicle's current location, any entrance restrictions and whether you can reach it. A destination name isn't always the parking address.
OAK is Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport. It is a different airport from SFO. If you're calling about a car near either airport, name the airport and parking facility clearly; access to a restricted area isn't something to assume.
Have ownership or authorization information ready to discuss. After key work, try the functions included in the estimate: starting, locking, remote buttons and the mechanical key if supplied. A useful spare belongs somewhere other than the ring with your everyday key.
A few useful answers.
Does a new fob always include a door key?
No. Ask whether a mechanical blade, cutting, programming and remote functions are included for the exact vehicle.
Can every make and model be handled?
Vehicle support must be checked. The site does not promise universal make, model or year coverage.
